Chapter: Not together anymore

There is a time when the gates to other worlds are open. You just had to know where they were. So it turned out that there was a little truth in the stories about fairies, elves, goblins and, of course, demons.
Today those gates are very rare. Closed by destruction or forgotten over the centuries.
Kagome was lucky to know one of those goals. And since back then, a good ten years ago, when she first found her way into one of those worlds, such stories about myths and legends were of no interest to her, she could not have known that her gate was not the only thing. Of course it was clear to her that only she and Inuyasha could pass through the gate. But there must have been a time when it was different. As she herself knew best, demons had also appeared in the here and now ... Or they had been in a rather long hibernation.
Kagome was currently attending university and studying mathematics. In those days when she was still attending school she had had a time when she had slacked off a lot in math, but she had now recovered. Learning even more and concentrating on her goal had opened up a new path for her.
She had been young and curious then. In addition, she was very taken with the duty imposed on her in the Middle Ages and, last but not least, she kept her heart with Inuyasha again and again.
A lot had happened over the years. She had thought a lot, about herself and about him. She really loved him very much. But reason won out in the end. Of course Inuyasha could have become a human, but he has now accepted his birth inheritance and no longer wanted to become a full-fledged demon. After all, he was fed up with that. He could have come to her as a person. But even if he liked to pick up Kagome in her era and sometimes waited there for a long time, the hectic pace and stench of a city was a horror to him.Not only that, everything was more complicated here than in his world. There were more prohibitions here than he could have fleas himself.
"You are only allowed to cross the street when the light is green. And those with males on them! Stop, you are not allowed to fish out the fish, we will buy some at the market! We are not allowed to enter this demarcated meadow! Shit, you can't go there because you don't have an ID. Take care of your hat, you can see your ears ... "And the Hanyou was allowed to listen to a lot more of that kind. Kagome was still smiling at how upset he was about all the things that weren't allowed to be done here. He had made it clear that he didn't want to live here, but as such, of course, he didn't mind visiting her.
Kagome, on the other hand, didn't want to live in his world either. There she couldn't be really happy and she also understood a little why Inuyasha wanted to keep his half-demonic side. Not all demons were so kind to Inuyasha. It was enough to know that he was a half demon and it was enough to know that someone had enough power to destroy a hundred demons in one go. It was enough for him to know that those hostile youkai fevered for that night of his weakness. So some still did not understand that Inuyasha was protected despite her weakened condition. After all, there were his friends Miroku, Sango, Shippo and Kirara. And other friendly demons also kept their eyes open or at least hid the time of his weakness.
Kagome was glad that Inuyasha had as many friends who protected him at those hours.
But as for herself; how often was Kagome with Inuyasha and how often she had also noticed that she could not be happy here, even if she was protected by him and she could also protect him if it was necessary, she simply couldn't do without the luxury of her time. She had her life in her time and not in Inuyashas, just as he had his life in his time.

Kagome was sitting in front of the shrine where the bone-eating well had been dormant for centuries and had been active again for ten years, and had one of her math books in her lap. She pondered hard and fiddled around with a complicated task, kept typing something in the calculator and scribbling on scraps of paper when Hojo sat down next to her and put a rose on her book. Kagome looked up and smiled at him. It was a pleasant way to be torn from the now annoying brooding. Especially since she couldn't really concentrate because she had so many memories of Inuyasha rummaging through her mind.
She was very well aware that Inuyasha might be right behind her, behind the door of the shrine, but she didn't care at the moment.
She had spoken to him about the situation several times. Besides, there was never more than harmless kisses between her and the demon.Somehow he had never quite understood what Kagome was getting at. Whether it was due to an inexperience with women or whether it was the circumstances in which Kagome's relationship was with Inuyasha. Love or no love, Kagome or Kikyo. Even if he said that both women were completely different to him, one couldn't deny that Kagome reminded him of Kikyo. No matter how different the two women might be. Maybe it was even what prevented him from going on and still couldn't be without Kagome.
With Kikyo everything came to a quick and painful end, which only appeared now and then and now somehow didn't appear at all. Nobody knew what was wrong with her. Was she still alive, if you could call it that? Kikyo didn't really care about Kagome. And she didn't want to waste a lot of thought about it.
Now a lot had happened in the course of time anyway. Hojo had persisted. He didn't want to just give up on Kagome. He only suspected something about Inuyasha but could not have known that he was a half-demon.
Kagome smiled at Hojo. She had really started to notice him.
"Hello, is your lecture over?" She asked cheerfully. He nodded and looked at her books.
"Yes, luckily. Today I was not exactly receptive. But you seem to be fully involved. Come on, let's take a break. I'll invite you to coffee. Or an ice cream, if you want."
He was always so kind to Kagome. Very different from Inuyasha, who was always a bit rougher and had no idea about romance. Hojo really was the complete opposite. He was calm and empathetic. Kagome kept bringing flowers and always seemed happy. But Inuyasha's roughness had irritated Kagome as well, and it still did. Still, Kagome had to choose just as Inuyasha had decided not to live in her world.
Two worlds and a love that could not have a future without becoming unhappy in the course of time.Kagome let Hojo help her up, gathered her books, and then walked off with him without looking back at the shrine.

Inuyasha crouched behind the closed door of the shrine and could watch Kagome through a crack, when she had leaned against the wooden wall, he crouched close behind her on the other side and took in her familiar scent, which he already knew from Kikyo. That beloved smell of licorice, if you wanted to put that smell into a description. Kagome's hair also smelled of roses, probably from her shampoo.
And now there was this other guy around, which almost made Inuyasha boil. He couldn't stand it when another guy threw himself so close to Kagome.
At first he wanted to jump up jealously out of habit and give Hojo hell, but then he thought about it.
Since the Shikon no tama was no longer available, be it for good or bad, everything had suddenly changed.Kagome told him that she didn't want to stay in his time and that there was a reason why she had studied for school all the time. And when he explained to her that he could not live in her world, they agreed to remain friends and to meet every now and then.
Inuyasha couldn't forget Kagome as quickly as she seemed to have. This hojo seemed to be exactly what Kagome wanted.
Inuyasha wondered if he had done anything wrong. He had become quieter over the years and was nowhere near as often pestering her as he had back then. He always cared so much for her. He always wanted to protect her. But what did the women like? Should he have given her flowers too? What is that supposed to be for now?
Kagome had once explained that to him, but he couldn't understand it. And then he'd always been a bit insecure when Kagome got too close to him. He always found it very pleasant and wanted more than just kissing her.But then again, he was never sure if it was good. He never knew when he was doing something right or wrong. So he didn't want to do anything. Now he thought that he should have done a lot more to keep Kagome down.
It made no difference now either. The matter was decided. And she showed more interest in this hojo now.
Inuyasha sighed softly and got up.
He shouldn't disturb Kagome now. He would visit her again tomorrow. When he could be near her he was very happy. She calmed him down. Her scent soothed him very much. He loved her so much that he couldn't imagine touching her more than a kiss.
For him she was untouchable love.
But he couldn't tell her. His tongue felt too heavy for that. But maybe that would be exactly what she wanted to hear? But that didn't matter anymore. Even if he wanted to now, he just couldn't.For him it was like offering himself on a silver platter and he hated the feeling.
Without being able to change anything now and realizing that it would stay as it was now, Inuyasha went down the wooden stairs to the fountain and jumped into it.
