Chapter 1 - At night under the sky of death
Yami, or Pharaoh Atemu, as he was actually called, had found peace thanks to Yugi. His spirit was no longer trapped in the world of the living. He was on the other side and only he knew what it was like there.
Yugi, Joey, Tea and Tristan had said goodbye to him, as hard as it was for them and how much it had torn their hearts. Although they had to let go of their 5,000-year-old boyfriend, they also felt happy despite the grief. Pharaoh had his past back. On the other hand, he would certainly see his father and his friends from ancient Egypt again - and finally get to know his mother, who had died when he was born.
"He's probably fine," Tea said seriously to little Yugi Muto, who was staring sadly from the stern of the ferry that brought her back to Cairo into the distance, to where the tomb was now hidden by the mountains he had had the duel with Pharaoh from which he had emerged victorious."You did the right thing", his friend Joey Wheeler wanted to cheer him up and leaned down on the height of Yugi. He wiped a tear from his face with his thumb.
"You also have to see the good: Since we are here in Egypt, we could go on vacation right away," added Tristan benevolently.
"We have school holidays anyway," Tea mused out loud, thinking especially of Yugi. The little one needed time to process everything, and he couldn't do that in a city where the noise of traffic and the roar of people disturbed his peace. He couldn't immediately immerse himself in his normal life again, especially when it was no longer normal, because Yami was no longer at his side.
"And are you staying in Cairo?", Tea later asked Mokuba Kaiba, who was at the front of the bow with his brother Seto, who had been trying to reach his bodyguard Roland, who was somewhere by plane, with his cell phone the Kaiba Corporation. But the only answer to his calls was always the message that the person could not be located.
"It looks like it does," replied the black-haired man happily. Finally they could go on vacation again, unintentionally, but he didn't care. His older brother was able to recover from the hardships that the job of managing director of a global company brought with it. For a week or two no more work that lasted until the early hours of the morning, just sleep in.
"Sorry, Mokuba, but I have important things to do. Maybe another time", Seto replied shortly and tried to contact Roland again. He really lied to his little brother. He was ashamed of it because the truth was, he had nothing important to do. He could have taken the time for a short stay in Cairo, but he hated this city and the country of Egypt. He didn't know why, but when he only heard something Egyptian, something indescribable began to turn like a snake that repeatedly bit into his soul and thus poisoned it.He felt a real hatred for this country.
"Oh come on, Kaiba, a rich pee like you will still be able to afford something like that. Or are we already in debt?", Joey asked mischievously. He had gone after Tea. Tristan and Yugi had moved below deck, where they sat with Ishizu, Marik and Odion.
"I would be careful what I say if I were you, Wheeler, or you could accidentally fall overboard; and street dogs like you usually can't stay afloat for long," replied Seto roughly. He didn't feel like arguing with the blonde and had no nerves.
Everyone - even Mokuba - were below deck, only Kaiba lay sprawled on the roof of the control cabin, where no one who was looking for him would suspect him. He looked towards the horizon. The sun went down, the day came to an end. Seto was happy about it. He had seen enough for today. Pharaoh had found his peace - and somehow he had found his own too.He wasn't happy that Yami had left, but he wasn't sad either. Ate-mu had never really belonged to his life, he just stepped in without Kai-ba having wanted to. Their fates became more and more entangled, and their common past in ancient Egypt came to the fore. Yes, he had known about all of this. From the event in ancient Egypt, from the millennium objects and from the three Egyptian god cards. He was finally admitting it to himself now. He had known all of this as a small child. His parents had told him about it. But he wanted to forget!
He looked against the sky. Soon the first stars would light up, but in two places there would be two black points in which he would get completely lost when he looked at them. Nine years ago two shining stars had shone there, but they had set along with the death of his and Mokuba's parents. He was ten at the time and his little brother was only five. Relatives had sent them to the orphanage, and on their first night there they had seen the two shooting stars, the farewell greetings from father and mother.
Back then he had to be strong for his brother and himself. In no moment had he been allowed to show weakness, although she had inhabited his body and ruled his soul. There had been so many moments when he wanted to give up, just wanted to lie there and wait for everything to come to an end, for everything to be just a dream. But it wasn't. Everything was real. How much he had wished that his parents had suddenly turned up at the orphanage and ticked everything off as a stupid joke. He would have forgiven them. But that hope diminished day by day until it was completely gone.
He had repressed all these memories, locked them in the deepest and darkest corner of his heart and hung a large lock of oblivion in front of them. But when Yami and his friends showed up, telling him about the millennium items, the god cards and their common past, the lock had been broken and waves of pain and suffering had flooded his entire soul. Had the Pharaoh done that warmly? Hadn't they even been friends in a previous life 5000 years ago? Why did he have to bring back the cruel memories in him?
"Kaiba", a familiar voice suddenly addressed him. Remaining lying down, he turned his head to one side.
Ishizu had seemed so strange to Seto's behavior. Though he was taciturn and in some ways arrogant, he was always in the same place as his younger brother. But why did he leave him alone now? The Egyptian had gone in search of the brown-haired billionaire. She apologized to the others and said she had a headache. She didn't know why she lied to the others. Mokuba had given her a serious look.He knew that she was fine and what she was up to, but he had let her go. After a thorough examination of all rooms, she stepped on deck, distraught. Was Kaiba really gone? Where was he? Her gaze wandered over the outline of the ferry, which was embossed in the last ray of sunshine. He also caught the eye of the white shirt that Seto had exchanged for his usual clothes along with normal jeans. The temperatures in Egypt were really high. She had taken quiet steps to the control cabin, had asked the captain with a brief wave of the hand to keep quiet about her whereabouts and had climbed the ladder that was attached to the wall.
When she saw him lying there, she thought he was sleeping, so she spoke his name softly. But he was awake, so he turned his head in her direction. At first she was completely lost in thought. There was so much sadness, pain, suffering, loneliness and fear in his pure, blue eyes that Ishizu thought she would be crushed by looking at them just a second longer. But with Seto's next blink there was no trace of it. There was only a gaping emptiness in his eyes.
"What do you want?" He asked harshly. He had wanted to be alone, but she had appeared and now sat down next to him.
"I just wanted to know what's wrong with you," she replied, trying to sound just as cold as he was, but she couldn't. Kaiba's brief look had penetrated her heart too deeply and cut her painfully with the edge of a knife.
"What should be the matter with me, except that you annoy me a lot, I'm fine!", He explained roughly. He had completely forgotten the pain his past kept causing him. How many times had he done that? To just suppress everything? Why did he do this, even though he knew that the wounds of his soul would keep opening again and again if he didn't finally start to deal with the pain?
"Kaiba?"
"Can't you think of anything else to annoy me?Then finally go! "
"I'm worried about you. Mokuba too."
"Leave my brother out of the picture. Just because the Pharaoh is gone, you don't have to choose me as your next victim!" She snapped at Seto.
"Oh, do you think there is a pharaoh after all," the grave guardian shot out. She felt sure of victory. But winner of what?
"If you then leave me alone: Yes," Kaiba replied coldly. He demonstratively turned his head in another direction.
"Why do you say that I should go when you actually want me to stay?" Asked the black-haired woman, worried and fully aware that she was telling the truth. He didn't want to be alone. He didn't want to deal with what hurt him so much that his soul overflowed with suffering, that the mere memory of it graced his eyes with invisible tears.
Seto didn't answer. He didn't even look at her. For the first time in his life, someone had realized what he wanted: not to be alone. He hated loneliness because it was a taciturn companion. She let him contemplate, but what he saw there made him stare, because inside him there was a chaos of the memories of his past - and none of them even made him smile. He had seen so much cruelty that the few seconds of bliss were lost in it and ridden into oblivion.
"Seto?" She deliberately called him by his first name. She didn't know why she had never done it before, for him she had always been Ishizu, never Nishtar. But she'd only ever called him Kaiba. The last name of a famous company leader who was snooty, callous and arrogant. But was that really him? Hadn't she been able to read in his eyes how much pain he had already endured? Was that what made him so hard?
"Seto?" She whispered softly.
The night had completely
