The girl sat with her legs drawn up on a rock by the lake. It was a freezing, moonlit winter night and the sky was clear with stars. Despite the cold, the girl only wore a black kimono. With tears in her eyes she stared at the black water of the lake. Slowly she leaned forward to look at her reflection. But no reflection appeared. Only the stars twinkled in the water. How should a mirror image appear? Only mortal beings had reflections. And she wasn't a mortal being. She had been on this planet for over a thousand years. Lonely. Alone. She had with
See how everyone she loved slowly died while she was untouched by the centuries. A lonely tear ran down her cheeks and dripped into the water. Wave rings spread. She looked up at the stars. In moments like this, she became aware of her own infinity, while the life of an ordinary mortal was so fleeting.But she would love to swap with anyone as long as she could die. The girl glanced at the water. Come on, the lake seemed to be saying, dive into the black water and forget your previous life. Reluctantly, she got up. Then she pulled the kimono off her shoulders. She was completely naked underneath. She stepped slowly into the ice-cold water until it gently caressed her ankles. Always careful not to fall, she waded on. When the water was up to her shoulders, her lips and skin were blue. She was trembling uncontrollably now. But then she went on until the waves crashed over the girl's head. Rings spread where it had sunk, but it never reappeared. After a while the water calmed down again. Only a black kimono on the bank was evidence that a living being had been here not long ago.
