Chapter 4: Why Is She Doing This?

For a long time Hinata had sat in the tree and just looked at the forest, but without seeing it. At some point she went home after all. She couldn't stay out all night.
~ Naruto's Part ~

The kitsune tossed and turned in bed restlessly. For half an eternity, he tried to forget her face and finally to sleep, but he couldn't. He couldn't forget the pale skin, the ebony hair, and those beautiful lavender eyes.

~ The next morning ~
~ Hiashi's part ~

Together with other important members of the clan, Hiashi Hyuga advised on a few important matters.
"Hinata is getting more and more rebellious. It's time to do something about it." The clan chief revealed the situation.
"What do you intend to do?" asked one present.
"She is 15. Old enough to be engaged."

The rehearsals were pretty fun because pretty much everything went wrong.Sasuke and Neji had a broken voice, Ino nagged at the costumes and Tsunade's patience was at the end.
In the evening they all went home pretty happily. Only Hinata remained standing in front of the half-finished scenery and looked sad. // What am I saying father? I can't keep it a secret forever. I just have to tell! // The heiress was just about to turn around and run home when she turned a bright orange. She ran into Naruto.
"Oh. Gomen Naruto-kun ..." she mumbled embarrassed and was halfway over when he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. Surprised, she turned around and looked at him questioningly. "Um ... H-Hinata ... Can I ask you something?" the blonde stuttered. "Sure. What ... is there the Naruto-kun?"
"So ... I ... um ... well ... next week is the summer sun festival and I where ... wanted to ask you ... eh ... if you want to ... well ... go there with me ..." he managed to stutter.First of all, the Hyuga was totally taken by surprise and then speechless. Since this conversation, the Hyuga heiress has been floating on clouds. Naruto, the Naruto Uzumaki wanted to go out with her! Lost in thought, she gazed at the afternoon sky. “HINATA!” The dark-haired woman winced, startled. Ino glared at her. “Did you even hear a word of what I said?” She asked reproachfully.
Hinata was sitting in a small ice cream parlor with Sakura, Tenten and Ino. She looked a little confused at her blonde friend. But it's also really hard to hit reality with your pink dream cloud.
"Uh ... I'm sorry Ino-chan," she managed, still a little dazed."Come on, what happened?" Sakura asked curiously. Her green eyes shone and looked at the Hyuga.
"So ... you know ... Mhm ... Naruto invited me to the ... summer party ...!" she finally confessed. Her friends' eyes grew as big as plates and a knowing grin spread across the three faces.
"I'm going with Sasuke!" Sakura burst out immediately.
"You broad forehead! What are you thinking of?" Ino bitched.
"You're going with Shika-kun anyway!" countered the pink-haired woman immediately.
"Yes you are right!" the blonde agreed and they both sat down again.
"I asked Neji ..." TenTen looked dejected.
"And?" asked her three friends at the same time.
"He said 'I'll pick you up at six'!" the brown-haired woman beamed.
"And we thought he refused!" shouted Sakura and Ino.
As a punishment, Ten-chan's hair was shredded.

~ A week later ~

//Great! What does father want now again? // Hinata wondered annoyed as she strode through the dark hallways of the Hyuga estate.Hiashi had called her again. Hinata had been lying on her bed half the day dreaming to herself. Tomorrow night the Summer Sun Festival would start and Naruto would pick them up.
With a queasy feeling in her stomach, she knocked on the door of the meeting room and was invited in immediately. Her father just looked down at his eldest daughter sternly and emotionlessly.
"Hinata, I just want to let you know that we arranged your engagement!"
Hinata's eyes widened in shock. No longer able to think clearly, she stared at her father. Was he totally crazy?
"My w-what?"
"Are you deaf? Your engagement! You're getting married in two weeks!"

She had cried all night. Hinata walked the streets with empty eyes. Her heart was heavy and every step seemed to hurt emotionally. She was looking for Naruto. To tell him that she couldn't come tonight, to tell him that they probably wouldn't be able to meet again, to tell him it was over ...Totally lost in thought she ran into someone and when she looked up, she recognized Naruto.
"Oh hi Hinata! What are you doing here?" the blonde grinned at her. The black-haired woman's eyes widened and the blood rustled in her ears.
"I ... I ... I have to ... tell you ... Naruto-kun ..." she stammered.
"Aha and what?"
God! Can't the guy stop grinning? That doesn't make things any easier either! It was hard enough breaking his heart, wasn't it?
"I can't come with you tonight, Naruto-kun ..." Hinata whispered, looking down at the floor. Tears gathered in her eyes, but she pulled herself together; she didn't want to put her tears on him too ...
"But why not? You were so happy?" The kitsune was really confused. Why did Hinata say that all of a sudden? // Can I really tell him this? Can I really do this to him? No ... but he has to know! //
The blonde put his arm around the girl who was standing in front of him so lost and somehow scared.By then she had started to tremble like an aspen leaf.
"Naruto ... I ... I ... will ... soon ... I ... will soon ..." Tears made their way again over the pale skin and found their death on the floor.
"What are you going to Hinata-chan?" he asked again. Her tears were not hidden from him. Why was she crying so bitterly?
"I'm getting married in ... two ... weeks, Naruto-kun ..."
As if he had been electrocuted, he let go of Hinata and stared at her in horror. What was she saying? Marry? Two weeks? His brain seemed reluctant to process this information ...
"Naruto ... it t-am ... I'm so ... so terribly sorry ..." she whispered and a painful stab was felt near her heart. She felt so miserable. As if she had betrayed Naruto, just played something for him, but the worst part was the knowledge that she had hurt him ...
"But why ... then did you tell me you wanted to go out with me. Why did you lie to me like that?"Horror spread through Hinata's body. She didn't want to lie to him and she never did! His words hurt ... very much ...
"But but…"
"Please save that but ..." the boy said softly.
"You shouldn't have lied to me, you could have been honest, Hinata-san ..."
Naruto remembered the loneliness of his childhood, the lies the villagers told him ...

A painful throbbing spread across the girl's temples. That "-san" hurt much more than his other words. Was she really a stranger to him now? Why didn't he want to hear her explanation? Did he think that she did that voluntarily ...?
Without paying attention to him, without responding to her dizziness, she ran away ...

Finally she stopped her run and realized where she was at all. She was standing in front of three larger tree trunks and remembered again.
