Chapter: The Chaos Begins

It was late and the three of us were sitting around the campfire. Each of us held a stick with marsh mallows on it in the fire. By now night had fallen and stars lit the cloudless sky. I sighed softly. Sora and Riku were talking animatedly about something, but I was only half listening. I enjoyed being out in the great outdoors with my two best friends far too much. Every now and then they fell silent for a few seconds while they ate their marsh mallows. I ate some too, today they tasted particularly good to me. A whole year had already passed, but you never knew when the next danger was coming and I wanted to spend as much time with them as I could.
"Kairi? Why are you so quiet? What are you thinking about?" It was Sora's voice that tore me from my thoughts.
"Hm? Oh, I'm just happy to be able to do something with you two!" I answered truthfully. Then the three of us talked about this and that, laughed, just had fun until late into the night.Eventually we got tired and hid in our tents. Even though I was half asleep, I couldn't sleep. I really don't know how I came up with it at that time, but I thought of Sora's funny looks. What did they mean? I crawled out of my tent again to get some fresh air. It was cooler than expected, but I didn't care. I just couldn't get it out of my head and I was able to think better outdoors.
I saw that the fire had already gone out and the ashes were only glowing slightly. Then I ran a little further and sat down on the sand. Listening to the waves, I thought about it, but I couldn't come up with anything. And again I let out a soft sigh. Suddenly I felt someone put something around my shoulder. A jacket. Sora? I looked back - Riku.
"You look disappointed, you were expecting Sora, didn't you?" Riku asked, sounding a little sad. Only now did I notice that my face reflected disappointment.I felt myself go bright red.
"N-no! How did you come up with it?", I defended myself, and added to distract from the subject: "What are you doing here?"
"Couldn't sleep and heard that you crawled out of your tent. It's a bit cold at this time. Thought you might need a jacket, and as you can see I was right: You don't have a jacket. And what do you do you? "came from Riku.
"I can't sleep either, so I wanted to go outside," I replied.
Riku sat down next to me. I wasn't sure whether to be happy about it or not. It didn't really matter. In any case, I could now forget the thought, now I couldn't think of anything.
Suddenly he put an arm around my shoulder. I looked at Riku, startled. I was expecting a lot, but that is not guaranteed. I also had a bad feeling in my stomach area. It was like having just written a paper and knowing that it couldn't turn out well.Riku looked at me too. I tried to interpret his gaze, but couldn't quite cope with the interpretation. It was a look I'd never seen on Riku, but it was also very different from Sora's funny look. Riku's gaze ... had something haunting in its own way. My instincts told me to end the whole thing as soon as possible, otherwise something could happen that I didn't want to.
"I think I'll go back to sleep. See you tomorrow," I mumbled, got up and handed Riku his jacket back. Riku took a moment to reply.
"Sleep well," he finally said. I turned away from Riku and went back. My gaze fell immediately on Sora's tent, because there, when I turned, something or someone had jerked back. But not Sora ...? It just couldn't have been Sora. I didn't know why myself, but the idea of ​​how he saw that Riku put an arm around me ...In the meantime I was back in my tent's sleeping bag. Did Sora really see it? But if not him, who or what was it then? I tried to get rid of the thoughts and finally fell asleep, but it didn't work. But actually it couldn't have been him. Sora was a late sleeper. And late risers had the quality of falling asleep quickly and not being woken up by anything. Or? And if not? I turned on the other side. Or maybe it was just my imagination.
"Please don't let him see it ... what else is he thinking?" I whispered into the pillow. Then a single tear rolled down my cheek. I was annoyed with myself. That was really no reason to cry! I turned back on the other side. A few minutes later I heard Riku's footsteps. He too went back to his tent.
Shortly afterwards I fell asleep.
