Chapter: A few years later ...

A few years later ...

It was a hot summer day and Nicki was sitting outside in the meadow and staring along the wide horizon. A lot of time has passed since she came to the orphanage 7 years ago and Nicki has for the most part coped with the pain of her mother's death.

A light wind was blowing. Just such a breeze that was refreshing on this hot July day. The wind blew through her hair and it flew into her face so that she had to put one hand behind her ear. "This is a wonderful day. I would like it to never end." "Hey, Nicki where are you?" Suddenly she heard a voice calling. She recognized this voice right away. It was her best friend. It was the one who had saved her from the cold, the one she trusted. "Alex, I'm here. What's up?" she called out to him. When Alex was with her, he first had to take a breath. "Where have you been? I've been looking for you everywhere! How did you get the idea to go so far from the orphanage?" he said while he was still gasping for breath."I'm sorry. I just left and then stopped at this meadow." Nicki said, a little surprised that Alex was worried. Because that's what he always did. He was just the kind of person who worried about his friends. "Yeah well. But let's go now." He said a little frantically. "Um ... why? It's afternoon and such a beautiful day. Come sit down with me and let us enjoy the afternoon." Alex sat down next to Nicki in the meadow and stared into the seemingly endless horizon. Now and then he turned his head to Nicki and looked at her from the side. In his eyes she was just the most adorable girl he knew. He was so in his mind that he didn't even notice that he was staring at her like that. Nicki noticed it and turned to him. "Hey!Alex what's up Is there anything on my face? "She asked confused." No. That's fine! Everything is perfect. Come here. "He said to her and stretched out his arm. Nicki slipped over to him and lay in his arms. Now both of them were lying there in the meadow, staring at the sky. // What would I do without him // Nicki thought to himself." They talked for a while and then Nicki fell asleep in his arms. When he noticed it was already getting dark. He got up, took her in his arms and carried her back to the orphanage. When he got there, he brought her up her room and put her in her bed. As he laid her down, he ran his hand through her hair and kissed her on the forehead. "Good night, princess. "He said to her and then went out of her room. When he was in his room, he lay down on his bed and stared at the ceiling. He was quite hot and so he put his covers aside. He tried to sleep, turned a little around in his bed but he finally managed to fall asleep.The next morning...

"Hey ... Alex come on! Wake up! You are still sleeping through breakfast. Alex come on! Get on your sleepy head." Nicki shouted while she pounded her hand on his door. She had been doing this for 10 minutes and there was no answer from Alex. "Hey Nicki! Tell me what is that about?" Tom asked a boy from the orphanage. "Alex doesn't wake up. He sleeps like a rock and doesn't hear my knocking. That's typical again." She said to Tom, a little annoyed. "Wait a minute. Let me do that." Tom pulled a small clasp from his pocket and went to the door lock with it. "So now I'll show you something. Take care," he said while waving the clasp in the lock. Suddenly you heard a soft click and the door opened a crack. "Thanks Tom. You did really well. You really have to teach me." Nicki said and went into Alex's room. "So, Alex, there is no such thing as just sleeping all day long.What's wrong? "She asked him as she got closer and closer. But there was no word from Alex." Alex? "She asked, a little worried." Is everything ok? "She took a few steps over to him and sat on the edge of his bed." Hey, wake up Alex. What's going on? "She said excitedly." Nicki what about him? "Asked Tom." I don't know what's going on. But he looks sick. "Tom went further into the room and Nicki grabbed Alex's forehead. She was frightened and immediately took her hand away from her forehead." I'll get a doctor right away. "He said and immediately ran out of the room. He ran to a supervisor and told her that Alex was bad. She immediately picked up the phone and called the doctor from the village.

15 minutes later...

The doctor had just come and sent Nicki and Alex out of the room to examine Alex.Both sat outside on two chairs and waited for the doctor to come out of his room and bring them good news. Nicki sat there with a blank look in her eyes and looked at the floor. // I don't have a good feeling. I hope it's not a bad thing. I don't want anything to happen to him. No // she kept thinking to herself. "Nicki ...?" can it be careful of Tom. "Hey Nicki ..." he nudged her. "What is?" Nicki asked him. "It's going to be all right. Everything will be fine," she said, albeit with less conviction than Tom. Suddenly the door to Alex's room opened and a man in a white coat came out. The doctor looked at Nicki and when she looked into his eyes, she knew that something was wrong. "What's the matter? How is he?" asked Tom, rather excited.He hadn't caught the non-verbal conversation between the two of them. "He ... he's not doing ... well, right?" Nicki suddenly said with a fixed look at the doctor and a certain empty eye that people only have when they know that something bad is going to happen. The doctor just lowered his head and shook it, confirming Nicki's question. "What? But what's he got?" asked Tom. "I don't know. The best thing is if we take him to a hospital. I'll call the ambulance." Said the doctor addressed and then went on. Tom followed him because he wanted to know more. But Nicki stayed in the same place as before. She didn't move an inch. //That can not be.
